Studio-live album for Nate Maingard

Described as a wordsmith and storyteller, Nate Maingard writes music which takes his listeners on a journey of thought-provoking sensation, inspired emotion and foot tapping catchiness. Thursday we record Nate's second album before a small studio audience. There's something kinetic that happens with the exchange between an artiste and audience in a personal and intimate ambience. That’s what we’re looking to capture, just like the cool vibe we snapped for Tony Cox, Nibs van der Spuy and Guy Buttery last year. But we've primed this one a bit. Olga Schoeman, a harpist whom we're currently recording a classical repertoire for, will drop her pearls of musical magic about the lucky few as they arrive and later Emre, our shiny pin from Turkey will help engineering the project. More to come.

SAMA nomination and another album for Derek Gripper on the way.

In March guitarist Derek Gripper returned to Knysna to record his second album with us, following on from the Sound of Water album we recorded last year which has just won him a SAMA nomination. This time we tracked the project in a small stone church on the Buffalo Bay Rd which has wonderful acoustics. Traffic noise from the N2 was a potential problem so we set up to record between 1 and 7 am on Sunday morning with the benefit of little traffic and denser air. The results were what we had hoped for; a warm natural verb, good sustain and some approprioate night noises.

This 10 track album is a beautifully packaged B-sides successor to Fox Hill Lane, comprising of an exclusive collection of out-takes, remakes, live recordings and demo's. It was initially due for release last year, after being completed at Peace of Eden Music Studios in 2010. Finally free from the corporate grip, “To Disappear in Place” is bound to make its mark on the South African music landscape. Get it from guybuttery.co.za The album also features three track remakes by the composer Chris Letcher from London, initially intended for the original release of Fox Hill Lane. “We tried to get his beautiful string arrangements, voice and soundscapes included, but ran out of time before the album went to print. I'm so happy these versions are finally seeing the light of day" says Buttery. Another out-take was the demo version for the title track featuring French singer/songwriter Piers Faccini, along with various other special guests such as KwaZulu-Natal legend Madala Kunene on vocals and jewish harp, as well as Guy's long-time guitar hero, Tony Cox. The LP release also includes an exclusive vinyl only track and extensive liner notes about each recording.Coinciding with the release of the vinyl is Guy’s first official music video. it eloquently captures the powerfully subtle process of “To Disappear in Place” via the title track 7” Postcard. The recording took place over two nights, 31st August and 1st September. Both nights attracted large audiences which responded enthusiastically to Guy's electrifying performances. A comprehensive miking plan allowed us to captured a detailed stereo spectrum of both the guitar and room.
